Recently we marked a major milestone for one of Northern Arizona’s most beloved musical organizations—Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music (FFOTM) turned 40 years old! What began as a humble gathering of musicians in the mid-1980s has blossomed into a cornerstone of Flagstaff’s cultural identity—uniting generations through music, dance, and the simple joy of shared tradition.

Back in 1984, in the mountain town of Flagstaff, a small circle of friends—Carol Placer, Ron Barton, and Tony Norris among them—came together to play wooden instruments, sing timeless tunes, and create an informal but vibrant community. These were the early sparks of what would become FFOTM, fueled by a deep love of traditional music and an open-armed approach to welcoming anyone who wanted to join in.

From contra dances with live bands and local callers, to campout jam sessions under the stars where Carter Family harmonies floated through the pines, FFOTM quickly became more than just a club—it was a movement. Over time, what started as a grassroots gathering evolved into a dynamic force for music education and cultural preservation in Flagstaff.

One of the shining examples of FFOTM’s commitment to education is the Young Jammers program, launched by members Christina Boyd and Lloyd Holdeman and carried on currently by Co-Directors Paisley Boone & Rebekah Davenport. The program has introduced countless children to the joys of traditional music, offering a hands-on, joyful path into playing instruments, connecting with peers, and participating in live performance.

In 2000, FFOTM took a major leap forward by becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, further cementing its role as a respected cultural institution. With this new structure came even more exciting developments—two music festivals were born: the Flagstaff Folk Festival, and the flagship celebration of roots and bluegrass, Pickin’ in the Pines. These festivals now draw music lovers from across the Southwest and beyond, showcasing world-class musicians and offering workshops, dances, youth programs, and of course, plenty of pickin’.

Today, FFOTM is a thriving nonprofit built on four decades of passion, volunteerism, and heart. Its mission remains true to its roots: to share, preserve, and promote traditional music and dance in Northern Arizona. And while the faces and instruments may change with time, the spirit of community that launched this organization in 1984 continues to resonate loud and clear.

So here’s to 40 years of FFOTM—to the melodies played, the friendships formed, the generations inspired, and the countless joyful nights that made this community what it is today.

We’ll see you on the dance floor, at the next jam session, or singing along at Pickin’ in the Pines and the Flagstaff Folk Festival. The music is still going strong. 🎶
